Overview
Motor vehicle registration and titling in Texas is done in the county of residence. State law requires that county tax assessor-collectors act as agents for the Texas Department of Transportation(TxDOT). These county officials and their employees collect fees, process 18 million annual registrations, and process five million title applications annually. The Vehicle Titles and Registration Division(VTR) is responsible for overseeing these operations. VTR headquarters is located in Austin, Texas, and there are 17 VTR Regional Offices located throughout the state.
